Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill: A Beacon of Punjabi Literature and Culture

Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, a distinguished figure in Punjabi literature and culture, was born on May 2, 1953, in the village of Basant Kot, near Dhyanpur in the Gurdaspur district. Born to Sardar Harnam Singh Gill and Tej Kaur, Prof. Gill was nurtured in an environment that valued education and cultural heritage. His siblings, Principal Manjit Kaur Waraich, Principal Jaswant Singh Gill, and Prof. Sukhwant Singh Gill, have always supported and fulfilled his aspirations, contributing to his growth as a remarkable individual.

Prof. Gill’s educational journey began in his village’s government school and continued at Sri Bawa Lal High School in Dhyanpur. He later pursued his higher education at Guru Nanak College, Kala Afghana, and GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, where he completed his graduation in 1974. His academic excellence continued as he secured second position in his MA Punjabi from Punjab University, Chandigarh, in 1976, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in literature and education.

Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill is a multifaceted personality—a competent Punjabi poet, literary commentator, editor of agricultural science literature, and an active organizer of cultural and rural sports events. His contributions to the Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, are noteworthy. Starting as an ordinary member in 1980, he rose through the ranks to become its president from 2010 to 2014. His leadership followed in the footsteps of esteemed predecessors like Bhai Sahib Bhai Jodh Singh and Dr. Surjit Patar. Today, he remains a vital part of the Akademi as a lifetime executive member and chairman of the publication committee.

His cultural contributions are equally impressive. As one of the founders of the Prof. Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation, he played a pivotal role in organizing the Prof. Mohan Singh Memorial Fair, serving as General Secretary from 1978 to 2014. His commitment to preserving and promoting rural sports is evident through his chairmanship of the Surjit Sports Association and the Rural Games Olympics in various villages across Punjab.

Prof. Gill’s academic career began in 1976 at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, and continued at Lajpat Rai Memorial College, Jagraon, until 1983. He then served as Senior Editor at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, until his retirement in 2013. Post-retirement, he contributed as Director of Planning and Development at Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo.

His literary contributions are vast, with numerous poetry and ghazal collections to his name, including "Har Dukhda Pind Mera Hai" and "Agan Katha." His work extends beyond poetry, as he has edited over 50 scientific books for Punjab Agricultural University and contributed to the promotion of Punjabi folk music through collaborations with renowned artists.

Recognized for his contributions, Prof. Gill has received numerous awards, including the Shiromani Punjabi Poet Award in 2014 and the Guru Nanak Samman in 2019. His residence in Ludhiana reflects his deep connection to the city where he has spent much of his life contributing to Punjabi literature and culture.
